How do you tell the most likable, most popular person he or she needs to improve? Further, how do you convince someone surrounded by highly supportive friends and family that perhaps they are not getting the best input to be successful in the professional world? For the millennial generation, it seems this is exactly the challenge, and not an easy one to address! After all, the millennials are a massive population onto themselves, and with such a large and diverse group, there are endless opportunities that easily redirect their attention from what is really important, especially when it comes to a career. For many years, I’ve hired, trained, mentored and managed dozens of millennials, only to find the same issue: They continue to get in their own (very well meaning) way when it comes to advancement. It seems as if there are too many influencers, all trying to be of help, but in the end they only confuse and mislead. This is not another ‘stick it to a generation’ publication, but quite the opposite: I really want millennials to succeed in every way possible; to move beyond the noise of constant advice posts and blogs, and instead find the heart of what it takes to develop a well-honed business acumen worth promoting into newer and more interesting career challenges. Some may see the millennials as the distracted generation, but I disagree. I see them as a very engaged and collaborative group that easily absorbs and transforms information faster than any previous generation. With that, I formatted this book to present useful insights and awareness while letting the millennials do what they do best: Apply it as they see fit. The goal is to help build a bridge to management and effective leadership. I want millennials to get promoted up into a very diverse team of influential peers through authentic interactions and highly-valued behaviors. I want millennials to move past a reactive job position and into a proactive career profession. In sum, I want you all to not just succeed in getting promoted, but to exceed expectations, and in the process, achieve it in your own unique way. So let’s get things started in the right direction: Moving up!
